Privacy policy
Effective date: 25 October 2026
In short
BtCarKey collects no personal data. It has no account, no analytics, no ads and it does not request the Internet permission, so it cannot send anything off your phone. Everything it stores stays on your device.
What the app stores on your phone
- Your boxes: the name you give each one, its serial number, its Bluetooth address and its protocol.
- The device keys that authenticate the phone to each box, encrypted with a key held in the Android Keystore. Showing, copying or exporting a key asks for your fingerprint or PIN.
- Settings: theme, home buttons, smart unlock thresholds and similar preferences.
- A diagnostic log of connection steps and commands, kept in the app's private storage. It never contains keys. It leaves the phone only if you share it yourself from the Log screen.
The app's data is excluded from Android backups. Uninstalling the app deletes all of it.
Permissions and why they are needed
- Nearby devices (Bluetooth scan and connect): to find your box and talk to it. Scanning is declared as never used to derive your location.
- Location (Android 10 and 11 only): those Android versions require it for any Bluetooth LE scan. The app does not read or store your location.
- Notifications: connection status, smart unlock events and lock confirmations.
- Foreground service (connected device): to keep the Bluetooth link to the box while "Stay connected" or smart unlock is working.
- Companion device presence: lets Android tell the app when your car comes into range, for smart unlock.
- Biometrics: to confirm it is you before a key is shown or exported.
- Wake lock and vibration: to lock the car on time with the screen off, and to confirm automatic locks.
Sharing
No data is shared with the developer or with third parties. The app talks only to your box, over Bluetooth.
Children
The app is meant for car owners and is not directed at children.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be published on this page with a new effective date.
